The governments will contribute $A19 million in joint funding for the project, which involves the construction of a 29 kilometre pipeline from Merri-abba to Lake Cargelligo, using up to three bores as water sources.
Construction will start immediately and is expected to take 12–18 months.
Ms Wong said “I’m pleased to be here today with the New South Wales Premier to guarantee the pipeline project funding and provide a permanent solution for Lake Cargelligo’s town water needs.
“The $A200 million Strengthening Basin Communities is part of the Australian Government’s comprehensive $A12.9 billion Water for the Future program, which is delivering the Murray Darling Basin onto a sustainable footing and taking decisive steps to prepare irrigators, farmers and communities for a future with less water.”
Article continues below…New South Wales Water Minister Phil Costa said that limited rain in the area recently will provide enough time to allow for construction of the new bores and pipeline.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government is funding the recently launched the Australian Water Education Toolkit as part of the Water for the Future program. The Water Education Toolkit is Australia's first water-education resource site.
